Lighting has a huge impact on our concentration and mood. It is especially important in the workplace. So find out how to properly light your office to make it a comfortable place to work.
Well-chosen light determines the level of concentration and well-being, and thus also the efficiency of work. That is why it is so important in spaces such as offices. So find out how to choose the right lighting
Let’s start with the fact that lighting in the workplace should comply with OSH rules. They assume that the employer is obliged to provide such lighting in the office which guarantees the employee comfortable vision, visual efficiency and safety. Moreover, properly designed office lighting must also take into account energy aspects related to maximum use of daylight and selection of optimal installation fixtures. It is also unacceptable to have too large differences in luminance between close and distant surroundings of the work area
There is often talk about using as much natural light as possible, but why is it so important? First of all because it has the best effect on concentration and health and is incomparably more comfortable than artificial light. This is because natural light makes our eyes not get tired so much, and thus we also have more energy to act. It is therefore worth setting up workplaces in such a way that as much daylight falls on them as possible.
Natural light, however, is not enough, because not all offices have access to glazed interiors, and in winter days are shorter, and thus it gets dark very quickly. It is therefore necessary to equip the office with a proper artificial light system, starting with the main ceiling source. The most popular and at the same time the most practical solution will be linear fluorescent lamps, which are responsible for uniform lighting of the entire room, and their additional advantage is energy efficiency. In workplaces, large lampshade or louver luminaires are also used. Remember also about the color rendering index, which in the case of office spaces should be higher than 80 Ra.
In addition to the main light, supportive light also plays a significant role. In an office room, a standing desk lamp should be placed at each workstation. When choosing it, it is worth to pay attention to the possibility of adjusting the angle of the head, which will allow to focus the light beam on a particular place. Supporting light should also appear in corridors. In this role a plaster wall lamp mounted on the wall will be perfect
The color of light is also of great importance, especially if the office rooms are small and you want to optically enlarge them. It is worth bearing in mind, that cooler light will reflect on the walls, ceiling and objects more intensively than dim and warm light, which will make the room seem bigger. Remember, too, that office lighting must be of the highest possible quality, which you shouldn’t skimp on under any circumstances.
